Under the influence of his father, Jim Leed develops a passion for weightlifting. However, when his father dies young without making a notable mark, Jim faces disapproval from his grandfather and other relatives for his commitment to the sport. Matters take a turn for the worse when he loses in the World Cup competition. Despite these setbacks, his mother, Sue York, remains his steadfast supporter, even going so far as to sell her blood to help fund his dreams.
